Hike to Camp to Fish - Mt Moran:Trapper Lake

This year we decided to take these old bodies into the backcountry for a few overnighters -- camping in the woods. We replaced our old tent, old stove and a bunch of other old stuff (it would be nice to replace the old lungs and old muscles too!). The new stuff is a lot lighter making the hike a bit more pleasant.

This was our first overnighter and we decided to do something easy -- a 4.5 mile "stroll". We call is a stroll since the trail is mostly flat, gaining only about 150' the entire way. The trail goes past String Lake, then Leigh Lake and ends up at Bearpaw and Trapper Lakes -- all in the Grand Teton National Park.  The goal was to mostly test out the new equipment and work out any bugs.

It was raining lightly when we were in the parking lot, but looking around it seemed that the bad weather was south and we were going north. We could have cancelled, but at this point we decided we could test the gear for rain too. Throughout the stroll, we wore rain gear, but mostly to stay warm, it was about 58F. Gear on, then gear off, as the weather changed from chance of rain to some sun.

The rain was mostly light or not there, nothing like a downpour or consistent steady rain. But upon returning to Jackson the next day, we realized that we really did "just miss" real rain. The rain gage on the porch read about .2" of rain .. a lot for this time of year.

Maybe a few too many pictures, but heck, it was fun to be out again.

Very nice views from the hike.

Starting out prepared for rain

Trapper Lake - surrounded by meadows and wildflowers

Purple and yellow -- that's Monkshood -- take a good look, it looks like a monk's hood.

At the campsite. It was nice, yet due to newly instituted backcountry fees, it was the most expensive campsite so far this year!

View from the campsite... creeping fog

Soda Butte Creek

The Soda Butte is located in the Lamar Valley and is considered one of the best trout streams in the US.  It is right beside the road, and holds lots of fish. AND, it is in the beautiful Lamar Valley, home to upwards of 3000-3500 bison. So, the fishing it good, the scenery is excellent and animals abound.

That is Alicia in the Soda Butte. Scenery, fishing and a herd of grunting bison on the bench behind her.  >>Click to see larger image.<<

At river level

She has one on!

The fish gives her a fight... and the bison don't care!

The reward....a cutthroat (see the orange marking under her jaw) .... we put them all back.

Afternoon weather developing

Another one!

Getting darker, but she keeps at it

Dark clouds and lots of rain over Alicia's shoulders. Probably time to go home after a good day of fishing. Smiles all around.

Mommy, Can we play with the people?

While coming back from our hike to fish the Yellowstone, we happened across a small group of Bighorn Sheep. It contained a few adult females and 3 calves.  They were off from us by about 100-150 ft -- and not looking very interested in us at all.

Then, all of a sudden, in an burst of youthful pleasure, two of the calves sprinted towards us, and stopped, checking us out. They were obviously unafraid of us, but kept a bit of distance. The group of adults seemed to care less and continued to graze.

We think the conversation may have gone something like this.

Calf 1 to calf 2: Let's just go!
Calf 2: but what will mom say, she will kill us!
Calf 1: run, run, .. just go!

Calf 1: There she is, she looks really BIG
Alicia's look says: Crap, I hope Mom doesn't come charging!

Calf 2 to mom: Mom, is it okay if I stay -- likely reply. Yes, but don't touch or feed the people!

Calf 1: Act Naturally!

Calf 1 again (since he is big cheese here) -- see nothing to worry about, they are tame!
Alicia is frozen in place -- keeping an eye on mom.

Both Calves -- well that was fun. Now for some pictures!

Finally Alicia gets to move again -- into the darkening skies and high probability of rain
