Campsite Expansion

We use our cabin tent a lot - anywhere from 30-60 days per year in summer only, and as a result, we get only 2-3years of use before the zipper fails or the fly gets so sun baked that it starts to leak a little.  So, what to do with the old one, throw it away? recycle it?

We tried a few things, such as using the fly only as an extension to cover the back of the Suburban when it rains. We considered cutting up sections of it and sewing pieces together to make it useful as a picnic table tent, (or maybe we should just buy a picnic table tent --- so we looked into it and nothing really works the way we wanted.)

After much discussion, we simply decided to keep the old tent and use it as an extra -- and it still fits in the overhead box.

Well, here's what the new camp set up looks like: a living room.  Nice for those times when there is some rain or some bugs and you don't want to hide in the "bedroom" tent. This configuration won't fit in many of the national park campsites though.. drat!

Waiting to see if we need to used the living room --- it eventually poured like hell while we were sleeping. Crazy weather!

Interesting views from inside the tent.

Re-purposed fly ... a bit blurry (it was raining!) but you get the idea ...

  1. I find the screen and fabric in tents to be useful! Old tents become stuff sacks and lightweight bags for other trips!
